From where will Christ climb down this Christmas?

Lawrence Ferlinghetti published a poem in the 1950's entitled, "Christ Climbed Down," which spoke of Christ climbing down from "his bear tree" to where there were no "Bing Crosby carollers" and other such signs of the commercialism of his day. Have things changed in the intervening 50 years? From what does Christ climb down today? Do we care?
